1.2 Benefits of AI-based patent search
Classical patent searching with keywords and Boolean operators quickly reaches its limits – especially when relevant documents do not contain the exact terms used or when technical relationships are described only indirectly. An AI-based patent search solution such as INTERGATOR Patent Search overcomes these limitations through natural-language and semantic search based on meaning, thereby identifying technically related results as well.
INTERGATOR Patent Search not only supports the discovery of relevant patent documents, but also their structured evaluation. In addition to identifying hits, the platform helps analyze technical relevance, feature overlaps, semantic proximity, textual references and key differences in a systematic way. This turns patent search into a traceable analysis process that not only lists hits, but also makes their technical significance visible for a specific research question.
Benefits at a glance:
- Search with free text instead of keywords: The search starts with a complete text – such as an invention disclosure – instead of a manually selected set of keywords. The AI automatically analyzes the text and identifies relevant terms, technical features and contextual relationships.
- Recognition of similar terms: Documents with different terminology are also found because the AI recognizes semantically similar concepts (e.g. “swimming pool” instead of “pool”). This also reveals hits that could easily be missed in a purely lexical search.
- Transparency and traceability: The automatically generated search query can be edited and visualized, e.g. with the context map, which graphically displays the semantic proximity of hits and terms. Hits, filters and text references remain traceable and can be further refined during the search process.
- Hybrid search possible: Users can flexibly combine semantic search, classical keyword search and bibliographic filters. This allows broad AI-based searches to be narrowed down by publication numbers, applicants, IPC/ICM classes, time periods, status information or Boolean syntax.
- Multilinguality: Thanks to specially trained language models for German and English, cross-lingual search is also easily possible. Technical content can therefore be found and evaluated across language boundaries.
- Time savings and higher hit accuracy: Intelligent pre-analysis, automatic filter generation and semantic relevance sorting lead to more precise results while reducing manual effort. Relevant documents can be identified, collected and processed more quickly.
- Re-ranking and structured hit evaluation: Search results can not only be viewed according to their initial relevance, but further condensed using additional filters, selected hits, semantic document similarity and technical criteria. This allows the ranking of hits to be gradually adapted to the specific research question.
- Analysis of technical relevance: INTERGATOR Patent Search supports the assessment of whether and why a hit is technically relevant. Central technical statements, functional relationships, components, features and relevant text passages can be recognized and classified more quickly.
- Identification of feature overlaps: When analyzing individual patent documents or hit lists, technical features, feature groups and overlaps with an initial description or reference document can be extracted. This is particularly useful for novelty searches, opposition or validity analyses and freedom-to-operate evaluations.
- Relevance analysis instead of a simple hit list: The platform helps not only to find hits, but also to evaluate them according to technical proximity, technical correspondence and possible deviations. This creates a structured overview of which documents are particularly important for the respective research question.
- Hit analysis with AI assistants: The assistant summarizes each document concisely, identifies feature groups and synonyms, highlights relevant text passages and, if required, creates component graphs – enabling faster and more transparent evaluation of hits.
- Documentable reports: Analysis results can be used as the basis for traceable reports. These include structured summaries, technical assessments, text references, feature comparisons and explanations of the relevance of individual hits. This facilitates internal documentation, coordination and sharing of search results.
The INTERGATOR Patent Search platform is operated in an ISO 27001-certified German data center – without connection to external AI clouds – and thus meets the highest requirements for data protection and information security.
